Sweetener Stevia Farming Has Become an Attractive Way to Expand Job Opportunities and Wages in Many Countries
San Antonio TX. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO), agriculture is the single largest employer in the world, providing livelihoods for 40 per cent of today’s global population. It is the largest source of income and jobs for poor rural households. A sustainable agriculture system plays a critical role in the fight against hunger, by ensuring environmental sustainability while increasing food and agriculture production.
Most of the human population lives in areas where food production and nature co-exist together. Biodiversity contributes to more wholesome diets, improved incomes for farming communities and sustainable farming practices.
The plant species Stevia rebaudiana, has been used for centuries by the Guaraní people from Brazil and Paraguay, to sweeten their local mate tea and as medicine. Nowadays, the high-purity stevia leaf extract is an intense sweetener that can be up to 350 times sweeter than sucrose (sugar), and it is being use as optional zero-calorie sweetener in foods and beverages around the world.
The stevia plant is a tender perennial that loves the warm sun and water but it prefers a loose, loamy, well-drained soil. When growing conditions are most ideal, farmers typically harvest stevia multiple times per year.
The Global Stevia Institute (GSI) says that the stevia plant is a sustainable crop, friendly to biodiversity and to the environment, because its farming, extraction and purification require less water, land, and energy than other naturally sourced sweet ingredients.
Since stevia extract is intensely sweet, it typically requires only a fifth of the land and much less water to provide the same amount of sweetness as other mainstream sweeteners. For example, in Kenya, stevia is typically grown only on a third of the land, with the rest of the land being devoted to other crops. So stevia may provide supplemental income to more commonplace crops.
According to the GSI, stevia farming provides a profitable crop for thousands of farmers in Asia, South America, and Africa. It does not replace food crops, but it is cultivated as a cash crop on smaller plots of farmlands in addition to food crops for added income. In Paraguay, for example, stevia has been grown for hundreds of years, but it is now becoming a profitable, sustainable cash crop for farmers.
