Stevia Extract is a Good Alternative to Be Used as Sweetener

San Antonio, TXStevia extract is a zero calorie sweetener of natural origin, extracted from the leaves of the plant species Stevia rebaudiana. This plant has been used for years by the Guaraní people from Brazil and Paraguay, to sweeten their local mate tea and as medicine. Currently the sweet compounds of the stevia plant, scientifically called steviol glycosides, can be extracted from the leaf and can be used in products to achieve a very similar taste of sucrose, but with no calorie intake.

According to the Global Stevia Institute (GSI), since stevia extractis calorie-free, using stevia instead of other caloric sweeteners in food and beverage products can help cut total calories.

The GSI states that the reason for stevia extract being zero calorie is because steviol glycosides –the components in stevia extract responsible of its sweetness – are poorly absorbed in the body and pass through the upper gastrointestinal tract, including the stomach and small intestines, fully intact. After being metabolized, it is excreted in the urine. Several research studies on stevia extract have shown there is no accumulation of stevia extract in the body during metabolism.

Stevia extract can reduce added sweet calories to lower total caloric intake without sacrificing taste in a wide variety of foods and beverages. The safety of high purity stevia extract is supported by the rigorous scientific research and the evaluation necessary for an ingredient to be approved for use in foods and beverages today.

Using stevia extract instead of sugar in a traditional breakfast can save you a lot of calories. Enjoying a traditional full breakfast with eggs, bacon, ketchup, baked beans in tomato sauce, a cup of butter-fried mushrooms, a half grilled tomato, orange juice, black tea with milk and sugar, and toast with strawberry jam, is a treat. The deliciousness in such a big breakfast, comes with a rather significant amount of calories and sugar. The GSI says that simply substituting stevia extract-sweetened foods instead of those sweetened with sugar (ketchup, orange juice, black tea, baked beans, and jam) saves 200 calories and 51 grams of sugar–a 59 percent decrease in sugar! – all without sacrificing taste. Substituting stevia extract-sweetened foods is an easy and delicious way to make that special breakfast spread a bit more enjoyable, when you know that you’re saving calories and getting less sugar than you would otherwise.
